What region was targeted by Operation Coronet, the second phase of the planned invasion of Japan?

The story behind the answer

The Kanto Plain was the region targeted by Operation Coronet, the second phase of the planned invasion of Japan.

Coronet was intended to follow Operation Olympic, which would have captured southern Kyushu. The planned Coronet landings would have taken place on the Kanto Plain near Tokyo, on the island of Honshu. The operation was tentatively scheduled for March 1, 1946.

The Kanto Plain was strategically important because it contained Tokyo and surrounding transportation, political, and industrial centers. Allied forces planned to land on beaches near Tokyo Bay and advance inland. The projected operation would have required a very large force, including units from the U.S. First and Eighth Armies.

Japan surrendered before either Olympic or Coronet began. A frequent mix-up is identifying Coronet as the initial invasion: Olympic was the first stage, aimed at Kyushu, while Coronet was the follow-up assault aimed at the Tokyo area. Together, the two operations made up Operation Downfall.
