What region is the setting of Pokémon's first generation?

The story behind the answer

Kanto is the setting of Pokémon's first generation. It is the region explored in Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow.

Kanto contains locations such as Pallet Town, Viridian City, Pewter City, Cerulean City, Lavender Town, and Cinnabar Island. The player travels through the region to challenge eight Gym Leaders, collect their badges, and eventually face the Elite Four and the Pokémon League Champion.

Kanto also introduced the original 151 Pokémon, including Pikachu, Charizard, Mewtwo, and the three starter choices Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. Its geography and characters became the template for later Pokémon regions.

Kanto is often confused with Johto because the two regions appear together in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal. Johto is the setting of the second generation, while Kanto is the first-generation region. The name also resembles Japan's real-world Kantō region, which influenced aspects of its design.
