What region inspired the design of the Pokémon world of Hoenn?

The story behind the answer

The Japanese island and region of Kyushu inspired the design of Hoenn in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire. The game’s developers rotated the real-world inspiration by 90 degrees to create a better gameplay layout.

Hoenn is the setting for Pokémon’s third-generation games and includes many islands, extensive sea routes, and areas that can be explored underwater. Its geography reflects Kyushu’s combination of mountainous terrain, coastlines, islands, and volcanic landscapes, while remaining a fictional Pokémon region.

Ruby and Sapphire were released for the Game Boy Advance in Japan in 2002 and internationally in 2003. Their legendary Pokémon, Groudon and Kyogre, reinforce the region’s emphasis on land, ocean, weather, and environmental balance.

Hoenn is part of a broader design tradition in the franchise. Kanto was inspired by the Kantō region of Japan, while Johto drew heavily from Japan’s Kansai region. These real-world influences are references for geography and culture, not exact maps.
