What rear suspension feature debuted on the 1963 Corvette Sting Ray?
Answer
independent rear suspension
Answer
independent rear suspension
The 1963 Corvette Sting Ray debuted with independent rear suspension.
This was one of the C2 generation’s most important engineering advances. Earlier Corvettes, including the 1962 C1, used a live or solid rear axle. The 1963 Sting Ray instead allowed the rear wheels to respond more independently, improving traction and handling over uneven surfaces.
Zora Arkus-Duntov and Chevrolet engineers developed a compact design with a frame-mounted differential, U-jointed half-shafts, control links, and a transverse leaf spring. The half-shafts also served as upper control links, while the system reduced unsprung weight compared with the old solid axle.
The feature is sometimes confused with the Sting Ray’s famous styling details, especially the split rear window, which appeared only on the 1963 coupe. It was the suspension—not the split window—that represented the major chassis breakthrough. The C2 was produced from 1963 through 1967, and the independent rear-suspension concept became a lasting Corvette tradition.
