La Sonora Ponceña takes its name from Ponce, Puerto Rico.
The band is a Puerto Rican salsa institution founded by Enrique “Quique” Lucca Caraballo. Although Lucca was born in Yauco, his family moved to Ponce when he was 16, and the city became central to his musical life and the group’s identity.
Lucca reorganized his band in 1954 under the name Conjunto Sonora Ponceña. His son, Papo Lucca, later became the group’s musical director and pianist, helping shape its enduring sound and international reputation.
The name does not refer to Bayamón, Arecibo or Mayagüez. Ponce is a major city on Puerto Rico’s southern coast, and the band’s name signals its connection to that community. La Sonora Ponceña has remained active for decades and has recorded dozens of albums.
