What pseudonym did J.K. Rowling use for her Cormoran Strike novels?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling used the pseudonym Robert Galbraith for her Cormoran Strike novels.

The first book published under the name was The Cuckoo’s Calling, released in 2013. It introduced Cormoran Strike, a private investigator, and Robin Ellacott, his secretary and later investigative partner. The series belongs to crime fiction rather than Rowling’s earlier fantasy work.

The author’s identity was initially kept secret. A Sunday Times investigation revealed in July 2013 that Rowling had written the novel. Rowling continued using Robert Galbraith as the credited author for later books in the series, while her connection to the pseudonym became public.

The name was chosen partly to give Rowling the freedom to write without the immediate expectations attached to her Harry Potter reputation. The Strike books have also been adapted for television as Strike, known in some markets as C.B. Strike.
