The pointed hat traditionally worn in Courir de Mardi Gras costumes is called a capuchon.
A capuchon is a tall, cone-shaped ceremonial hat associated with rural Cajun Mardi Gras celebrations in southern Louisiana. Participants in a Courir de Mardi Gras may wear brightly decorated, often patchwork costumes, masks, and capuchons while traveling through the community and asking residents for ingredients used in a communal gumbo.
The costume tradition draws on older European Carnival practices. Its exaggerated clothing disguises the wearer and permits playful role reversal, parodying social authorities such as nobles, clergy, and educated elites. The pointed form was associated with mocking the tall hats worn by noblewomen.
Capuchon is not another name for a beret, tricorn, or mitre, although mitre-style hats can also appear in Courir costumes. The term is related to words deriving from the Latin cappa, meaning a cape or hood. These hats are also unrelated to later Ku Klux Klan hoods.
