What platform hosted the first Rhythm Heaven series release?

The story behind the answer

The first Rhythm Heaven series release was hosted on the Game Boy Advance. Its original Japanese title was Rhythm Tengoku, and Nintendo released it in Japan on August 3, 2006.

The game grew from an early Game Boy Advance technology demonstration by programmer Kazuyoshi Osawa, who experimented with using the handheld's buttons as a drum kit. The team chose the platform partly because its small, portable screen suited the game's compact rhythm challenges.

Rhythm Tengoku relied heavily on audio cues instead of constant visual instructions, a design choice that became a defining feature of the series. It was developed by Nintendo SPD, with musician Tsunku serving as producer and composer. The game was Japan-only on the handheld, although an arcade adaptation later appeared on Sega's NAOMI hardware.

A common mix-up is confusing the first platform with the first internationally released game. Rhythm Heaven, the Nintendo DS sequel, was the first entry released outside Japan under the Rhythm Heaven name. The series later moved to the Wii with Rhythm Heaven Fever and the Nintendo 3DS with Rhythm Heaven Megamix.
