The Tibetan Plateau is generally recognized as the world's highest and largest plateau above sea level. It covers roughly 2.5 million square kilometres and has an average elevation exceeding 4,500 metres, earning it the nickname “the Roof of the World.”

The plateau stretches across much of Tibet and Qinghai, with extensions into parts of China, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. Its uplift is closely tied to the ongoing collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, which also created the Himalayas along its southern edge.

It is more than a flat, empty plain: mountain ranges, glaciers, grasslands, deserts and large lakes occupy the region. The plateau is a major source area for rivers including the Yangtze, Yellow, Mekong, Indus and Brahmaputra. Mount Everest stands on its southern margin, although Everest itself is a mountain, not part of the plateau’s average elevation.
