Warren Buffett has pledged to give 99% of his wealth to charity. The commitment is usually described in terms of his net worth, rather than as a promise to donate exactly 99% of every future dollar he earns.
Buffett made the pledge in 2006, announcing that most of his fortune would eventually go to philanthropic causes. The largest share has been directed to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, while substantial gifts have also supported foundations run by his children.
The pledge is closely associated with the Giving Pledge, the campaign Buffett launched with Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates in 2010. That initiative encourages billionaires to promise most of their wealth to charity, but it is a moral commitment rather than a legally binding contract.
A common mix-up is choosing 100%. Buffett has not generally promised every dollar of his fortune: he has said he intends to retain a small portion for his family and personal purposes. The 99% figure captures the scale of his planned charitable giving.
