The occipital lobe is the part of the brain primarily responsible for processing vision.
Located at the back of the cerebrum, the occipital lobe contains the visual cortex. Signals from the eyes travel through the optic nerves and thalamus before reaching the primary visual cortex, also called V1, where basic features such as edges, color, orientation, and movement begin to be analyzed.
Vision is not handled by one tiny spot alone. V1 sends information to specialized areas and pathways: the ventral stream helps identify objects and faces—the “what” pathway—while the dorsal stream helps determine location and guide actions—the “where” or “how” pathway. This is why seeing involves networks beyond the occipital lobe as well.
A common mix-up is confusing the occipital lobe with the frontal or temporal lobes. Damage to the occipital lobe can cause visual-field loss or, if both sides are severely affected, cortical blindness, even when the eyes themselves still function.
