What operating system powers modern Snap Spectacles? Snap OS powers modern Snap Spectacles.
Snap OS is Snap Inc.’s proprietary operating system for its augmented-reality Spectacles. It provides the glasses’ interface, navigation, hand-tracking interactions and support for AR experiences called Lenses. The fifth-generation Spectacles, unveiled in September 2024, were the first to introduce Snap OS as a dedicated platform.
Earlier Spectacles generations were mainly camera glasses that paired with a smartphone and transferred photos or videos to Snapchat. That history can cause confusion: Android, iOS and other phone platforms supported the companion app, but they were not the operating system running the glasses themselves. Android XR, Wear OS and visionOS are separate platforms associated with other hardware ecosystems.
Snap OS also reflects Snap’s shift from wearable cameras toward standalone AR computing. The current glasses use cameras and sensors for spatial understanding, while developers build compatible Lenses with Snap’s Lens Studio tools.
