What online GIF search engine is owned by Google?

The story behind the answer

Tenor is the online GIF search engine owned by Google. The service began as Riffsy, a GIF-focused startup founded in 2014, before adopting the Tenor name as its ambitions expanded beyond a keyboard product.

Tenor’s main service lets users search for animated GIFs and stickers, then share them through messaging apps, social platforms, and integrated keyboards. Its GIF Keyboard became available across mobile platforms, helping make visual reactions easy to insert into conversations. Tenor also offered software tools that allowed developers to add GIF search and sharing to their own apps and games.

Google acquired Tenor on March 27, 2018. The acquisition did not erase the Tenor brand: the service continued operating as a standalone product under Google ownership. A common mix-up is confusing Tenor with GIPHY, another major GIF database. Both provide searchable animated media, but they are separate services and have had different corporate owners. Tenor was also originally known by the name Riffsy.
