The Oceanic country whose capital is Honiara and whose currency is the dollar is the Solomon Islands. The Solomon Islands dollar, usually written as SBD or SI$, is the country’s official currency.
The Solomon Islands is an archipelago in Melanesia, northeast of Australia and east of Papua New Guinea. Its territory includes six major islands and hundreds of smaller islands, giving the country a strongly maritime geography. Honiara, on Guadalcanal, is the national capital and largest urban centre.
The Solomon Islands dollar was introduced in 1977, replacing the Australian dollar that had circulated during the colonial period. It is divided into 100 cents and is issued in both coins and banknotes. The currency’s name can cause confusion because several countries use a dollar, including Australia, New Zealand, and nearby Fiji.
The country became independent from the United Kingdom in 1978. Although “Solomon Islands” sounds plural, it is the standard singular country name and should not be confused with the separate Solomon Islands archipelago references used in historical geography.
