The locomotive planned for the 2026 Freedom Train was renumbered 250 for America’s 250th anniversary.
The locomotive was Reading T-1 No. 2100, a restored steam locomotive intended to pull a new Freedom Train during the United States Semiquincentennial. Renumbering it “No. 250” directly connected the train with the anniversary being commemorated.
The project drew on earlier national trains. The first Freedom Train toured in 1947–1949, displaying American historical objects, while the American Freedom Train toured all 48 contiguous states in 1975–1976 for the Bicentennial. The planned 2026 train was meant to continue that tradition of bringing history to communities by rail.
The number 2100 identifies the locomotive’s original restored identity, while 250 was the anniversary designation. The planned excursion was later suspended in 2026 because of financial, railroad-access, and scheduling difficulties.
