The quinceañera’s ceremonial candle ritual is traditionally associated with 15 candles.
The candles correspond to the honoree’s fifteenth birthday and may be presented, lit, or dedicated during the celebration. In some versions, the quinceañera gives candles to important people in her life, while in others relatives or friends participate in a symbolic presentation.
The practice is not identical everywhere. Candle ceremonies may be religious, family-centered, or simply part of the reception program. Some families use a single ceremonial candle instead, and many contemporary celebrations omit candles entirely.
The number should not be confused with the number of attendants in the court, which varies by family and local custom. It also should not be treated as a required element of every quinceañera. The stable association is symbolic: fifteen candles reflect the honoree’s fifteenth year.
