What nickname is commonly given to the 1929 Wall Street Crash’s first major panic day?

The story behind the answer

Black Thursday is the common nickname for the first major panic day of the 1929 Wall Street Crash.

On October 24, 1929, heavy selling caused prices to plunge on the New York Stock Exchange. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped sharply, although a group of leading bankers later bought shares in an effort to restore confidence and stabilize prices.

That intervention provided only temporary relief. Selling returned on the following Monday and intensified on Black Tuesday, October 29. The crash therefore unfolded over several trading sessions rather than in one isolated moment.

Black Thursday is sometimes confused with Black Tuesday because Black Tuesday became the best-known date. The two names refer to different days in the same 1929 market collapse, while Black Monday referred to October 28.
