What New York building housed Andy Warhol’s Silver Factory?

The story behind the answer

Andy Warhol’s Silver Factory was housed at 231 East 47th Street in New York City.

Warhol established the studio in 1964, and its walls, ceilings, and objects were covered with silver foil and silver paint. The striking interior helped give the workplace its famous name. It became a center for art production, filmmaking, music, fashion, and the social world surrounding Warhol.

The Factory was not a single permanent address. Warhol and his collaborators later worked at several Manhattan locations, including sites on Union Square and Broadway. For that reason, references to “the Factory” may describe different periods of his career.

The first Silver Factory is particularly associated with assistants, performers, musicians, and visitors known as Warhol superstars. It was a working studio as well as a gathering place, making the address an important part of New York’s 1960s cultural history.
