Abiquiú became a major home and subject for Georgia O’Keeffe after 1949.
O’Keeffe moved permanently to New Mexico in 1949 and established a home and studio in Abiquiú. The property included a historic adobe house that she restored and used as both a residence and a working environment. Its courtyard wall and distinctive door became recurring subjects in her paintings.
Abiquiú is different from Ghost Ranch, another New Mexico location strongly associated with O’Keeffe. Ghost Ranch supplied dramatic cliffs and desert scenery, while Abiquiú provided the architecture and immediate surroundings of her home. Both places shaped her mature work.
The Georgia O’Keeffe Home and Studio in Abiquiú is now preserved as a historic site. Santa Fe, where O’Keeffe also lived and where the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum is located, is nearby but was not the name of her principal adobe home and studio.
