What nationality was the Romantic painter Francisco Goya?

The story behind the answer

What nationality was the Romantic painter Francisco Goya? Francisco Goya was Spanish.

Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes was born in 1746 in Fuendetodos, Aragón, then part of Spain. He trained in Zaragoza and later developed his career in Madrid, where he worked for the Spanish crown and became a court painter. His national identity is therefore not merely an association with his subject matter: he was a Spanish artist by birth and professional career.

Goya served Charles III and Charles IV and became First Court Painter in 1799. Alongside portraits and tapestry designs, he produced prints and paintings responding to Spanish political violence, including The Third of May 1808 and The Disasters of War.

His later career became increasingly experimental and dark. The Black Paintings, painted on the walls of his house near Madrid, helped establish his reputation as a bridge between the Old Masters and modern art. Goya left Spain for Bordeaux in 1824 and died in France in 1828, but his artistic identity remained fundamentally Spanish.
