What name is given to the small heart-shaped candies with printed messages?

The story behind the answer

Conversation hearts are the small heart-shaped candies printed with romantic messages.

The best-known American version is Sweethearts, a pressed sugar candy traditionally printed with phrases such as “Be Mine,” “Kiss Me,” and “Miss You.” Their compact shape and short messages make them an edible form of the tiny romantic notes exchanged on Valentine's Day.

The candy's history began with the New England Confectionery Company. Oliver Chase developed a machine in 1847 for cutting lozenges, and his brother Daniel added printed sayings in 1866. The heart-shaped version appeared under the Sweethearts name in 1901.

“Conversation hearts” is the generic name, while Sweethearts is a major American brand. The similar British candy Love Hearts is made by Swizzels and is generally round, with a heart design and message embossed on its surface. That regional difference sometimes causes confusion, but it does not change the quiz answer.
