The formal group dance performed by a quinceañera and her court is traditionally a waltz.
The waltz is often presented after the honoree’s entrance or during the reception. The quinceañera may dance with members of her court, including her chambelanes and damas, in a choreographed routine. Some families call this presentation a vals or vals de quinceañera.
The dance is not necessarily an entire evening of waltz music. It is a prepared ceremonial number, and modern versions may blend ballroom steps with popular choreography. The court’s costumes and the dance’s complexity vary widely.
A waltz is also associated with other formal celebrations, so it is not unique to quinceañeras. In this tradition, however, its role is to publicly present the honoree and her attendants during the transition-themed celebration.
