What name is given to the decorated Ukrainian Easter egg tradition?

The story behind the answer

The decorated Ukrainian Easter egg tradition is called pysanka.

A pysanka is an egg decorated with traditional Ukrainian folk designs using a wax-resist method. The word comes from the Ukrainian verb pysaty, meaning “to write,” because the design is applied by writing with melted beeswax rather than painting the whole surface at once.

Artists draw patterns with a stylus called a kistka, apply dye, add more wax, and repeat the process with progressively darker colors. When the wax is removed, the protected areas reveal the layered design. Common motifs include geometric forms, plants, stars, and animals.

Pysanky are associated especially with Easter, although decorated eggs have older regional roots and can carry family, religious, and cultural meanings. A pysanka is usually a decorated raw egg, while a krashanka is generally a single-color dyed egg, a distinction that prevents the two terms from being treated as exact synonyms.
