What name does Gandalf use for his horse in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

Gandalf’s horse in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings is named Shadowfax.

Shadowfax is a great horse of Rohan and belongs to the line of the Mearas, horses renowned for their intelligence, speed, and strength. King Théoden eventually allows Gandalf to choose him, after which the wizard rides Shadowfax during the War of the Ring.

The horse is famous for running without saddle or bridle and for carrying Gandalf over extraordinary distances. In The Return of the King, Shadowfax helps Gandalf travel rapidly between major events, including the defense of Minas Tirith. His pale appearance and exceptional speed make him one of the most distinctive animals in Tolkien’s story.

Shadowfax is sometimes confused with horses associated with other characters. Brego is Théoden’s horse in the film adaptation, while Hasufel and Arod are horses used by members of the Fellowship. Those names belong to different horses and are not alternatives for Gandalf’s mount.
