Bilbo Baggins names the sword he takes from the trolls Sting in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.
Bilbo finds the blade in a cave during the encounter with three trolls. Although it is small compared with the swords used by Elves and Men, it becomes a highly important weapon in his adventures. Bilbo names it Sting after using it against giant spiders in Mirkwood.
The sword has a special property: its blade glows blue when Orcs or Goblins are nearby. Tolkien later gives Sting to Frodo Baggins, who carries it during the journey to Mordor. Samwise Gamgee also uses it after Shelob attacks Frodo.
Sting is often confused with other famous blades from Tolkien’s legendarium. Glamdring belongs to Gandalf, Orcrist is associated with Thorin Oakenshield, and Andúril is Aragorn’s reforged sword. Those names belong to different weapons and characters.
