What name did the Cincinnati Open adopt in 1901?

The story behind the answer

The Cincinnati Open adopted the name Tri-State Tennis Tournament in 1901.

The event began in 1899 as the Cincinnati Open, but organizers renamed it two years later. The Tri-State Tennis Tournament name remained in use until 1969.

Across its history, the competition has carried several names, including ATP Championships and Western & Southern Open. It returned to the Cincinnati Open name after Western & Southern ended its title sponsorship arrangement in connection with the tournament’s expanded format.

The 2026 event therefore represented a modern return to the historic Cincinnati Open identity. The name change in 1901 belongs to the tournament’s early history and is unrelated to its later classification as an ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 event.
