What name did Surge first use in Norway?

The story behind the answer

Surge first used the name Urge when Coca-Cola test-launched it in Norway.

The Norwegian test launch took place on April 22, 1996. Coca-Cola selected Norway as a manageable test market with high carbonated-drink consumption, allowing the company to gather feedback before a wider rollout. The drink was bottled locally by Ringnes, a Coca-Cola bottling partner at the time.

The name difference was not a change in the drink’s basic identity. Coca-Cola wanted to market the product internationally as Surge, but that name was already registered in Norway by another company. The Norwegian version therefore appeared as Urge, a name it retained in that market.

Surge was formally unveiled by Coca-Cola in December 1996 and reached 140 U.S. markets on January 13, 1997. Its concept targeted Mountain Dew with an aggressive, extreme-sports image and a citrus profile. Vault was a later Coca-Cola citrus-energy soda, not the original Norwegian name for Surge.
