What musical style is a mariachi group often hired to perform at a Mexican quinceañera?

Mariachi music is a musical style often performed at Mexican quinceañeras.

Mariachi is a Mexican ensemble tradition associated with instruments such as violins, trumpets, guitars, vihuela, and guitarrón. A group may perform during the reception, accompany a family entrance, provide songs for a serenade, or play between formal dances.

Hiring mariachi is especially associated with Mexican celebrations, but not every quinceañera includes it. Families may instead choose a DJ, a regional band, recorded music, or musicians from another tradition. The choice depends on budget, location, family heritage, and personal taste.

Mariachi should not be confused with a single song or with all Mexican music. It is an ensemble and performance tradition with a broad repertory. Its presence at a quinceañera connects the birthday celebration with Mexican musical culture while leaving room for modern popular music.
