Answer
USS Arizona Memorial
Answer
USS Arizona Memorial
The USS Arizona Memorial was dedicated in 1962 above the wreck of USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor.
The memorial spans the sunken battleship without touching it and commemorates the 1,177 crew members who died aboard Arizona during the attack. Its white structure includes an opening that allows visitors to look down toward the wreck and the harbor below.
Architect Alfred Preis designed the memorial, which was dedicated on May 30, 1962. The site became one of the best-known places associated with the Pearl Harbor attack and the entry of the United States into World War II.
Oil still sometimes rises from the wreck, a phenomenon popularly called the “black tears of the Arizona.” The ship remains a U.S. military war grave, so visitors are asked to treat the site with respect.
