What month was renamed after Julius Caesar?

The story behind the answer

The month renamed after Julius Caesar was July. It was originally called Quintilis, meaning “fifth month,” because the early Roman calendar began in March. After Caesar’s calendar reforms, the Senate renamed Quintilis Julius in his honor because he had been born during that month.

The Julian calendar, introduced in 46 BC and implemented in 45 BC, reorganized the Roman year around a 365-day year with a leap day every four years. This corrected the drift that had accumulated in the older Roman calendar. The month’s name later became July in English and related forms across many languages.

A common mix-up is August, which was named after Caesar’s adopted heir and first Roman emperor, Augustus. August was originally called Sextilis, meaning “sixth month.” Caesar’s month is July, while Augustus’s month is August; both names remain in modern calendars.
