What model of car does Captain Holt own and name Gertie?

The story behind the answer

Captain Raymond Holt owns and names a Chevrolet Corvair “Gertie.” The burgundy convertible is one of his most treasured possessions and reveals a warmer, more eccentric side beneath his famously formal and controlled manner.

Gertie appears as a classic car associated with Holt and his husband, Kevin. Holt treats the vehicle with extraordinary affection, even though other characters do not share his opinion of its value or appeal. In “The Mattress,” Charles Boyle accidentally scratches it, creating a comic conflict because Holt reacts as though a family heirloom has been damaged.

The car becomes especially important in the season-four two-part story “The Fugitive.” Car thief George steals Gertie along with vehicles from an event, and Holt later discovers that the car has been taken to a chop shop. The episode gives the usually restrained captain an unusually emotional reaction.

Viewers sometimes remember only the Chevrolet name or confuse Gertie with the replacement car Doug Judy gives Holt. That replacement is an identical Corvair, later named Sexarella; the original car Holt called Gertie was the Chevrolet Corvair.
