What military academy did Edgar Allan Poe attend?

The military academy Edgar Allan Poe attended was the United States Military Academy at West Point, commonly called West Point. He entered as a cadet in New York in 1830, after serving in the U.S. Army and receiving help from his foster father, John Allan, to secure an appointment.

Poe did not remain at the academy long. After Allan remarried and their relationship deteriorated, Poe deliberately sought dismissal by neglecting formations, classes, and church attendance. He was court-martialed in February 1831 for gross neglect of duty and disobedience of orders, then left West Point.

His time there was brief but consequential. Poe had already published poetry and soon turned decisively toward a literary career. His departure from West Point also helped end his difficult relationship with Allan, whose financial support Poe had depended on. The academy is sometimes confused with a military school in Virginia or a naval academy, but Poe’s institution was the U.S. Military Academy in New York.
