In a traditional bullfight, a matador or other torero performs a staged series of passes with capes before the final phase, when the matador uses a smaller red cape called a muleta. The bull is not attracted to the color red itself. Cattle are dichromats and do not perceive red in the same way humans do; the bull reacts primarily to the cape's movement. The red color is largely traditional and also helps conceal blood stains. Bullfighting remains culturally significant in parts of Mexico but is controversial because the traditional spectacle ends with the bull's death, and laws regarding it vary by location.
