Michael Phelps won a silver medal in the 2016 Olympic men’s 100-metre butterfly. Singapore’s Joseph Schooling won gold in an Olympic-record time of 50.39 seconds, while Phelps shared silver with South Africa’s Chad le Clos and Hungary’s László Cseh.
All three silver medalists finished in 51.14 seconds, creating a rare three-way tie. Phelps had been attempting to win the event for a fourth consecutive Olympics, having taken gold in 2004, 2008, and 2012. Schooling’s victory ended that streak and gave Singapore its first Olympic gold medal.
The result was still one of Phelps’s major achievements at the Rio Games. The silver was his 27th Olympic medal, and he later won another gold in the 4×100-metre medley relay. The event is sometimes remembered simply as Schooling beating Phelps, but the official result included three swimmers tied for second place.
