What mechanical soldier is Leonardo da Vinci’s famous humanoid robot design commonly called?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci’s famous humanoid robot design is commonly called Leonardo’s robot.

The design dates to about 1495 and is often described as a mechanical knight because its outer appearance was based on a German-Italian medieval suit of armor. Internal cables, pulleys, and gears were arranged to move parts of the figure, including the jaw, arms, and head, when operated by a person.

Leonardo probably developed the machine for a court entertainment or pageant in Milan, although the surviving evidence does not prove that a complete working robot was presented. The design was reconstructed in the twentieth century after researchers studied Leonardo’s notebooks and found the mechanical details.

It was not an autonomous robot in the modern electronic sense. It had no computer, sensors, or independent decision-making system. “Leonardo’s robot” identifies the reconstructed mechanical design, while “mechanical knight” describes its armored appearance and likely performance context.
