What mechanical soldier did Leonardo da Vinci design with armor and internal cables?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a mechanical soldier known as Leonardo’s robot or Leonardo’s mechanical knight.

Leonardo created the design in 1495, probably for a festival or court entertainment commissioned by Ludovico Sforza in Milan. The machine wore medieval-style armor and contained a system of cables, pulleys, and gears. Those mechanisms could make the figure sit, stand, raise its arms, and move its head and jaw.

The robot was an automaton, meaning it was powered by internal mechanical mechanisms rather than electricity or an engine. It should not be confused with a modern autonomous robot capable of independent decision-making.

The original machine has not survived, so modern reconstructions rely on Leonardo’s drawings and notes. In 2002, Mark Rosheim built a reconstruction that demonstrated how the design could operate. The project is important because it reveals Leonardo’s interest in anatomy, mechanics, theater, and controlled motion.
