What mechanical performer did Leonardo da Vinci design in the shape of a knight?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a mechanical knight, an automaton capable of making humanlike movements.

The machine was created for a court celebration in Milan around 1495. Its internal system used cables, pulleys, and gears connected to a control mechanism. Reconstructions indicate that the knight could sit or stand, move its arms, and move its jaw. Leonardo’s original purpose was entertainment rather than practical labor.

The design is often called Leonardo’s robot, but “robot” is a modern term. The word robot was introduced centuries later, so “automaton” or “mechanical knight” is historically more accurate. No complete original machine has survived, and much of the modern understanding comes from Leonardo’s drawings and notes.

The knight illustrates Leonardo’s interest in anatomy and mechanics. He used the structure of the human body as a model for transferring motion through artificial joints and linkages.
