What mechanical figure did Leonardo da Vinci design with moving limbs and a suit of armor?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a mechanical knight with moving limbs inside a suit of armor.

The design is usually dated to around 1495, when Leonardo was working in Milan for Ludovico Sforza. Cables, pulleys, and gears connected an internal operating system to the knight's limbs. The figure was reportedly intended for a court entertainment, where it could sit, stand, raise its visor, and move its arms.

No complete original machine survives, and the design was reconstructed from Leonardo's notes and anatomical studies. In 2002, roboticist Mark Rosheim built a model based on the surviving evidence and showed that the mechanism could produce the described movements.

The mechanical knight is often called Leonardo's robot, but that modern label can mislead. It was an automaton: a machine carrying out preset motions, not a programmable computer or an autonomous humanoid robot in the modern sense.
