What mechanical figure did Leonardo da Vinci design with armor, a drum, and internal gears?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a mechanical robot knight operated by internal gears and cables.

Leonardo created the design in 1495 while working for Ludovico Sforza in Milan. The machine was intended as an armored figure that could sit, stand, raise its arms, and move its head and jaw. A system of pulleys, cables, and gears inside the armor transferred motion from operating controls to the limbs.

The robot was probably an automaton for court spectacle rather than an autonomous robot in the modern sense. No original machine survives, and historians debate how fully Leonardo built it. In 2002, engineer Mark Rosheim constructed a working model based on Leonardo’s drawings and demonstrated its movements. Later reconstructions have helped show that the mechanism was physically plausible.

The design is often linked to a famous mechanical lion associated with Leonardo, but those are separate projects. The knight is also not an artificial-intelligence machine: it had no sensing, learning, or independent decision-making. Its significance lies in Leonardo’s sophisticated use of mechanical transmission to imitate human movement.
