What mechanical figure did Leonardo da Vinci design to sit, walk, and move its arms inside armor?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a robot knight, a mechanical figure intended to sit, walk, and move its arms inside armor.

Leonardo created the design in Milan around 1495, probably for a pageant organized under the patronage of Ludovico Sforza. The knight’s internal system used cables, pulleys, and gears linked to a control mechanism. Drawings suggest that it could raise its arms, move its head, and operate its jaw.

No original robot knight has survived, and for centuries the design was known mainly through Leonardo’s notebooks. In the early 2000s, engineer Mark Rosheim reconstructed the machine from the surviving drawings. His model showed that the mechanism could perform several of the movements Leonardo had planned.

The device was an automaton, not an autonomous robot in the modern computer-controlled sense. It had no electronic sensors or programmable software. Its importance lies in its mechanical control system and in the evidence it provides of Renaissance interest in lifelike machines.
