What mechanical figure did Leonardo da Vinci design to imitate a human knight?
Answer
Mechanical knight
Answer
Mechanical knight
Leonardo da Vinci designed a mechanical knight, an early humanoid automaton.
He created the design around 1495 while working in Milan for Ludovico Sforza. The figure was dressed in armor and operated by an internal system of pulleys, cables, and gears. Leonardo’s notes indicate that it could sit, stand, move its arms, and move its jaw.
The machine was probably intended for a court spectacle rather than for combat. Renaissance celebrations frequently included elaborate mechanical performances, and an armored figure that moved like a person would have been a striking theatrical invention.
No original mechanical knight survives. In the twentieth century, robotics expert Mark Rosheim studied Leonardo’s drawings and built reconstructions based on them. The device is therefore better described as a designed automaton than as a working robot in the modern electronic sense.
