What mechanical figure did Leonardo da Vinci design that is commonly called a robot knight?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a mechanical figure commonly called a robot knight.

The design was created around 1495, probably for festivities at the court of Ludovico Sforza in Milan. It was dressed in armor and used an internal system of gears, cables, and pulleys to imitate human movements. Reconstructions suggest that the figure could sit, stand, raise its arms, and move its head and jaw.

Leonardo’s surviving notes do not provide a complete, explicit description of the machine, so modern researchers reconstructed its operation from scattered drawings. The figure is better classified as an automaton than as a modern programmable robot.

In 2002, roboticist Mark Rosheim built a working model based on Leonardo’s designs. The reconstruction helped demonstrate that the mechanism was mechanically plausible. The robot knight is important because it links Renaissance theatrical engineering with later traditions of robotics and humanoid machines.
