What mechanical figure did Leonardo da Vinci design as a human-like automaton?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a human-like automaton known as the robotic knight.

Leonardo created the design around 1495 for a pageant in Milan organized for Ludovico Sforza. The armored figure was built around a system of pulleys, cables, and gears that could reportedly sit, stand, move its arms, and raise its visor. It was intended as theatrical machinery, not as an autonomous machine with artificial intelligence.

The original device disappeared, and its exact performance cannot be confirmed from a surviving working example. In the 1950s, researchers found notebook drawings that helped reconstruct the mechanism. Modern replicas have shown that the figure’s movements are mechanically plausible.

The robotic knight is often called the world’s first humanoid robot. That label is a modern comparison, since the word “robot” was coined much later. Leonardo’s achievement was designing a programmable-looking mechanical figure from Renaissance materials and principles.
