What mechanical automaton did Leonardo da Vinci design in the form of a human-like knight?
Answer
Mechanical knight
Answer
Mechanical knight
Leonardo da Vinci designed a human-like automaton known as the mechanical knight.
Leonardo created the design for a mechanical figure around 1495, probably for a festival or court entertainment in Milan. The knight was constructed from wood, leather, and metal components and was intended to perform movements such as sitting, standing, and moving its arms. Internal cables and pulleys linked the mechanisms to the figure’s limbs.
The original machine has not survived, so historians cannot inspect every detail of its construction. In 2002, roboticist Mark Rosheim built a working interpretation based on Leonardo’s drawings. The reconstruction showed that the design could support a range of human-like movements.
Calling it a robot uses a modern category for a Renaissance automaton. Leonardo’s machine was not an electronic robot and had no autonomous artificial intelligence. It was a mechanically programmed figure, operated by linkages, making it an important early example of humanoid automaton design.
