What mechanical automaton did Leonardo da Vinci design in armor for a Milanese court performance?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a robotic knight in armor for a Milanese court performance.

Leonardo created the design in 1495 for a pageant organized under the patronage of Ludovico Sforza in Milan. The machine was arranged inside a suit of German-Italian armor and used cables, pulleys, and a control system to imitate human actions. Surviving notes indicate that it could sit, stand, raise its arms, and move its head and jaw.

The original machine was lost, so its exact performance cannot be observed directly. In the late twentieth century, researchers reconstructed the design from Leonardo’s technical drawings and showed that the mechanism was mechanically plausible.

The robot was an automaton, not a programmable electronic robot. Its motions came from Renaissance mechanical components and preset controls. The project demonstrates Leonardo’s interest in anatomy, stage machinery, and engineering at the same time, while also showing why the word “robot” must be understood as a modern label for an earlier mechanical device.
