What mechanical automaton did Leonardo da Vinci design in 1495?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a mechanical knight in 1495.

The design was created for a festival in Milan organized under the patronage of Ludovico Sforza. Leonardo’s drawings show an armored figure operated by an internal system of pulleys, cables, and gears. The mechanism was intended to make the figure perform human-like movements, including sitting, standing, and moving its arms.

The original automaton was lost, so the exact behavior of the historical machine cannot be observed directly. In the 20th century, researchers studied Leonardo’s sketches and built reconstructions based on them. One well-known reconstruction was completed in 2002 by Mark Rosheim.

The machine is often called Leonardo’s robot, but “robot” is a modern label. The word robot was coined centuries later, and Leonardo’s device was a mechanical automaton rather than a programmable electronic robot.
