What mechanical automaton did Leonardo da Vinci design as a moving armored figure?
Answer
Mechanical knight
Answer
Mechanical knight
Leonardo da Vinci designed a mechanical knight, an automaton shaped like an armored human figure.
He created the design around 1495 for a pageant in Milan commissioned by Ludovico Sforza. The machine was intended to sit, stand, move its arms, and operate its jaw through an internal system of pulleys, cables, and gears.
Leonardo’s notebooks contain detailed anatomical studies, and the mechanical knight reflects that interest in translating human movement into machinery. Its armor-like exterior also suited court spectacles and military imagery.
The original automaton has not survived, so historians cannot directly confirm how much of the design was built or how well it performed. In 2002, roboticist Mark Rosheim constructed a working model based on Leonardo’s drawings.
The mechanical knight is often described as an early humanoid robot. That modern term is helpful for comparison, but the invention was a Renaissance automaton powered by mechanical linkages rather than electronics or software.
