What mechanical automaton did Leonardo da Vinci design as a human-shaped armored figure?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a human-shaped mechanical automaton known as the mechanical knight.

He prepared the design around 1495 for a pageant at the court of Ludovico Sforza in Milan. The knight wore a suit of armor and used an internal system of gears, cables, and pulleys to imitate human movements. Reconstructions indicate that it could sit, stand, raise its arms, and move its head and jaw.

The original machine has not survived, and historians cannot confirm every movement Leonardo intended. In 2002, roboticist Mark Rosheim built a working model based on Leonardo's drawings and notes. Later research suggested that Leonardo's mechanism was more sophisticated than the simple display figure often imagined.

The mechanical knight is a landmark in the history of robotics because it applied anatomical observation and mechanical transmission to a human-like machine. It should not be confused with Leonardo's separate mechanical lion, another automaton associated with court spectacle.
