Nokia used a unibody polycarbonate shell for the Lumia 920, continuing the colorful design language established by earlier Lumia models and the Nokia N9. Polycarbonate is a strong engineering thermoplastic: it is lighter than many metals, resistant to impact, and can be molded into the phone’s smooth, rounded shape. The Lumia 920’s shell was available in several colors, including yellow, red, white, black, and gray, with glossy and matte finishes depending on the model.

The casing material is often confused with the phone’s display cover. The Lumia 920 used curved Gorilla Glass 2 over a 4.5-inch IPS LCD screen, while the body itself was polycarbonate. Its physical buttons also used different materials, including ceramic fittings designed to resist scratching.

The Lumia 920 launched in 2012 as one of Nokia’s first Windows Phone 8 devices. Its sturdy shell contributed to a solid feel, although the phone’s 185-gram weight and relatively thick 10.7-millimetre body drew criticism.
