What material forms the outer body of the Tesla Cybertruck?

Stainless steel forms the outer body of the Tesla Cybertruck. Tesla selected a highly rigid stainless-steel alloy to create the vehicle’s angular exterior and distinctive unpainted metallic appearance.

The Cybertruck was unveiled in 2019 as an electric pickup with a sharp, geometric design. Its body panels are intended to contribute to structural strength and durability, while the lack of conventional paint gives the truck its recognizable silver finish. The material choice also created manufacturing challenges because stainless steel is harder to form than many automotive body materials.

Tesla’s presentation emphasized the truck’s toughness, including demonstrations involving the body and windows. However, individual demonstrations do not mean the vehicle is indestructible, and real-world performance depends on the specific component and conditions.

The Cybertruck should not be confused with Tesla’s earlier vehicles, whose bodies primarily use painted steel and aluminum components. Its stainless-steel exterior is one of the clearest ways to distinguish the pickup from the Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y.
